How To Pull Off an At-Home Blowout

Maybe, like a lot of us, you haven’t always had the best luck when it comes to successfully executing an at-home blowout. We get it—it can feel downright impossible to recreate the bouncy, smooth strands you leave the salon with. But these quarantine days have us handling a lot of the things we used to leave to the experts—cooking, mani-pedis, and troubleshooting Zoom issues among them. Why not add an at-home blowout to the list? While we’re generally enjoying giving our hair a break from heat styling, sometimes (like these times) a girl just needs a great hair day. Read on to get Moroccanoil Senior Education Development Manager David S.’s tips for pulling off a salon-quality blowout at home.

Safety First

Whenever you’re styling with hot tools, heat protectant is a non-negotiable. We made sure Perfect Defense works on wet or dry hair, so you only need one product regardless of what tool you reach for. “When blow-drying, apply to towel-dried hair before the application of styling products,” says David. “When curling or using a flat iron, apply to dry hair before refreshing your look.”

Pick the Right Hair Dryer

All hair dryers are not created equal, and the tech used to make them function has come a long way in the past few years. (That’s part of why we relaunched our Styling Tools Collection in the first place.) Look for one that will handle a lot of the heavy lifting for you. For instance, our new Smart Styling Infrared Hair Dryer features a patented heating unit that reduces drying time by up to 50% and harnesses far infrared light to limit heat damage. “Use it with the Speed Dry Nozzle (it’s included!) to achieve ultra-smooth styles,” says David. Then, amp up the smoothing factor with the right styling products—for ultimate smooth, he recommends Smoothing Lotion and the Ceramic Paddle Brush.

Got curls? We’ve got you—just swap the Speed Dry Nozzle for the Curl Defining Diffuser, then style with Curl Defining Cream and Glimmer Shine for frizz-free, glossy curls that last.

Revisit the Round Brush

You knew it was coming. Though it can be hard to master the art of blow-drying with a round brush, it’s one of the best tools in your arsenal when it comes to creating an at-home blowout that’s on par with one you’d get at the salon. It’s also surprisingly versatile once you get the hang of it—David advises using to create body, bend, waves, or volume. “Pair with Thickening Lotion to ‘build the hair out’ for ultimate body, or with Volumizing Mousse to ‘build the hair up’ for ultimate volume,” he says. Section, Then Style

To truly bring the in-salon experience home, try the tools no stylist station is complete without: Styling Clips! “Use to isolate and secure large sections of hair for a more controlled blow-dry,” says David. “Just secure top, back, and side sections. Working section by section will allow for a faster blow-dry with a more even and polished result.”

Practice Makes Perfect

Like anything else, you’re unlikely to master an at-home blowout on your first (or even second or third try). But we guarantee that with a little patience and practice, you’ll figure out the best way to get a look you love. And don’t hesitate to reach out for more styling tips and tricks!
