Giving Tuesday: A New Look for | Veterans

Happy Giving Tuesday! We can’t think of a better way to celebrate than by sharing this inspiring story from Octagon Salon & Spa in Illinois. Led by owner Janelle Nagy, the team there honored local veterans by offering complimentary makeovers. Learn more about the day and witness the in-progress makeovers by watching the video here, or read about the planning and inspiration behind the event in Janelle’s own words.

“A good friend started the Midwest Veterans Closet, and I have been taking clothing, kitchenware—everything I can get my hands on, really—to their facility to help our veterans who have many needs. The goal is to give them a hand up: to help them to find work, set up homes and generally get their lives back on track.

Since these vets were invited to a Veterans Day dinner at a local restaurant, Mission BBQ, we thought it would be fun to spiff them up for the event!

We gladly accommodated all of them, and everyone had a good time. Our staff was really touched by these unsung heroes who deserve our gratitude. The vets were so humble and thankful for the TLC we gave them—which included haircuts, manicures, pedicures and waxing services.

To our fellow salon tribes, this event was done in the middle of a Wednesday and cost us a little over $600. The benefit to everyone involved was so well worth it. We got into this business because we love to help people look and feel beautiful. Just contact any Veterans assistance facility and they will gladly take you up on any offer—big or small.

Personally, I love my country and am so grateful for these brave people who defend our freedom. Veterans have the hardest job and are often criticized rather than praised. This was a small but appreciated gesture of thanks that we were able to offer using our gifts."
